Introduction
"GP appraisal over the last two years has become an accepted and valuable part of the personal development planning of general practitioners. The significance of appraisal has increased since its inception. In part this has been as the impacts of the Shipman enquiry have materialised. Also the introduction of accredition from April 2005 further drives the need to ensure that GP appraisal is carried out in a thorough, supportive and developmental way.
Appraisal as well as driving individual development, should be used to help PCTs plan for the educational and human resource issues raised through the anonymised findings. Aggregating anonymised data at PCT level, through reports to the PEC and Board, should act as a powerful driver for PCTs to engage both local practitioners as well as external workforce development agencies. This will create an environment that ensures a first class local climate within which the primary care workforce practices.
National Association of Primary Care Educators, have produced with NatPaCT support (sheets 12 & 13), this excellent suite of guidelines. If used in the application and steering of appraisal they will ensure the process is not only thoroughly professional in approach, but also has significant impact at PEC and Board level."
